Term 5 Newsletter – May 2025

Dear Parents and Carers, This term has seen us coming together as a school community for a variety of celebratory all-school events and in support of academic tests and workshops – as always, we are incredibly grateful to our parents and carers for your unwavering support. You’ve involvement, whether preparing wonderful outfits for our VE Day party, helping our pupils with their learning at home or simply your encouragement to children and staff .. it all means the world to us, thank you!
We marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a very special assembly where we heard some incredible stories of bravery and camaraderie about servicemen and women who made great sacrifices to protect us and our freedom. Our classrooms were decorated with our own hand-made VE Day bunting and in our music lessons Mrs Greenbank introduced us to some songs from the 40s. We topped off our celebration with a marvellous sunny playground street party. As you can see from the photos, we all thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in our red, white and blue clothes and sharing a special VE Day event!
Year 3 have been enjoying a very ‘hands-on’ Biology topic this term. Pupils have each cared for their own plant, monitoring their seed’s germination and potting the young seedlings. This practical topic allowed pupils to explore how plants make food via photosynthesis and the transportation of water to the leaves. Using celery and food colour, pupils were able to see the transportation of water in action!
Year 4 Pupils’ maths topic this week has been money! Mr White’s class have been learning to ‘round up’ as well as converting pennies into pounds. Pupils used their maths skills to estimate total spend based on a shopping list of items and their individual costs .. Great job everyone!
Year 1 pupils really enjoyed their taste sensory lesson! Pupils took part in a taste test, where every pupil tried a range of fruits and vegetables including passion fruit, lemon, red peppers watermelon and kiwi fruit. Miss Richardson encouraged pupils to try each item, stressing that not everyone will like everything, but to use their senses to describe the flavour and remember that taste buds may change over time. Well done Year 1! A great investigation with lots of children discovering new flavours that they loved!
A huge well done to WPS for their outstanding performance and victory in the Floodlit Football Tournament. The team showed incredible teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the competition where their hard work has truly paid off. We are so proud of your achievement. Congratulations to Tommy H, Joshua S, Joseph H, Louis P in Year 6 and to Nathaniel H, Esme S, Harry W, Mason S, Billy S, Tomi B, Alex C in Year 5 and all the squad members from the season. Thank you also to our lovely coaches Mr White and Paul.
Science Workshops. Years 1, 2 and 3 all enjoyed interactive and stimulating experiments and investigations hosted by Fizz Pop Science. Pictured below, Year 2’s sessions which focused on colour, learning about the colours of the rainbow before going on to stage their own colour investigations starting with infra-red. Pupils understood it can’t be seen with the naked eye but saw it using a special camera. Next, we experimented with ultraviolet light, testing a range of items to see which were fluorescent under UV light. We then tested bank notes to see which were ‘fake’ and ‘real’ using a special pen .. we spotted all the fakes and were able to identify all errors!
Finally, we made a little something to take home. Pupils were given six random beads of different colours. When the beads are put against UV light or sunlight the beads changed colour.
Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a very welcome ‘fun day’ to mark the end of the tests, and what a lot of fun we all had! Pupils and staff enjoyed a rather lively game of rounders, a pizza picnic and the high point for most pupils … a ‘splash battle’ , and yes, some of us came off rather worse than others!!
What a treat it was to see all your creative and beautifully designed Easter bonnets and t-shirts! They all brightened up our day.
